Tom's Creek Falls (Marion, NC)
Hiking is not my family's favorite activity. My wife really does not like the outdoors (though she is a good sport about it) and my kids will say they do not like hiking much but often seem to enjoy it more than they will audibly tell you. This is partly due to a bad hiking experience (see post on Waterrock Knob). I tried to find something enjoyable for the whole family that would get us outside for a bit but would not take up an entire day. I had never visited Tom's Creek Falls and after reading a bit about it decided this would be a nice family outing based on the low level of difficulty and the 1.5 mile round trip.
Located north of Marion, North Carolina just off of Hwy 221, the trailhead was easy to find. The parking area at the trailhead is a small, dirt parking lot that can hold 5-6 cars so crowds are generally not a problem here if you can find a parking spot. The hike out to the falls was very easy, level, and mostly wheelchair accessible. There are several primitive camping spots along the creek as well. Just because it is not a long or difficult hike does not mean that it is not worth the trip though. Tom's Creek Falls is a very nice 80' + waterfall with a few bonus features nearby. There is a nice observation deck that gives a lovely view of the falls and several side trails that lead to the creek and a closer view of the falls. My kids enjoyed being there so much they actually made several TikTok videos with the falls in the background and they enjoyed walking through and playing in the creek. Just below the falls (on the opposite side of the creek from where the trail comes out to the viewing deck and beyond) is a an old, abandoned, and flooded mica mine which can be accessed fairly easily. The additional trek to the mine can be a bit muddy during the rainy season so be aware if you rock hop across the creek to see it.
Overall, this is a a very nice, pleasant, easy hike and is very suitable for small kids and families.
Total Miles: 1.4 mile out and back, easy
Features: waterfall, creek, mica mine
Overall rating: 4/5
